How to get there!

Nydia Bay can only be accessed by foot or bike along the Nydia Walkway or by boat from Pelorus Sound. Water taxis operate from Havelock, or people with their own boats can launch at Duncan Bay or Elaine Bay. Security for vehicles is probably better in Havelock.

The Nydia Track – Riding/Walking

More information on the track can be found in this DOC leaflet:

http://www.doc.govt.nz/Documents/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/nelson-marlborough/nydia-track.pdf

If you haven’t ridden the track before, then we’ve tried to give you a feel for it here: Mountain Biking

Access by Water Taxi

The Pelorus Sound Water Taxi & Cruises boat takes 20 people plus gear. The rate per person depends on how many people are on board. The minimum rate is $260 for up to 4 people, which works out at $65/person. It is then a sliding scale down to $30/person for a completely full boat of 20. It takes approx 45 mins for the trip. From the RSVPs it looks like we’ll have between 10-15 people per trip.

Prices will be confirmed and payment taken by Dean and Denise on the day.

If you are biking/walking in and would like gear to come in on the boat, you’ll have to ensure that it is brought to the Havelock Marina in good time for one of these times (exact spot tbc). We’ll look after the cost of putting the extra gear on the boat.

We will also be going in on Thursday with gear, so if you have camp chairs or BBQs, please bring them to our house beforehand: 76 Tosswill Road, Tahunanui, Nelson.

There is also The Mailboat – https://themailboat.co.nz/ this operates on a schedule departing Havelock at 10am. It looks like it only stops at Nydia Bay on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons.

If you fancy kayaking or paddleboarding in, it looks like approx 23km for the launching ramp at Kaiuma Bay. Or nearly 30km from Havelock Marina.

For those planning to sail around from Nelson, it’s out through French Pass, around Clay point and then navigating your way into Pelorus Sound. Definitely a trip worth spending a few days over!
